Top 40 of 2016: #17

I love this so insanely much, and by all rights this shouldn’t work at all. But it’s a testament to Shane McNally, who produced and co-arranged, that it does. This is a Frankenstein mash-up of three songs acknowledged as country classics — John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” (which only hit #50 on the country chart, but #2 pop; Denver subsequently notched a trio of #1 country singles), Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again,” and Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” — sung by 30 CMA Award-winners, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the CMA Awards. McNally, somehow, mashed the three songs into one magnificent beast, and then recorded all of his stars singing all three songs, so that he could pick and choose vocal lines at will. Pretty much everyone you’d expect to be present and accounted for is, from Tim & Faith and Willie and Dolly, to Eric Church, Luke Bryan, Brad Paisley, and Carrie Underwood. Charley Pride and Ronnie Milsap show up too, as do Alabama and Brooks & Dunn. And I could go on. The video is an insane festival of CGI that I love in spite of myself, but I feel no such issues loving this song. This was a perfect tribute to 50 years of the CMAs.
